April 2016 - present

Post-Doctoral position at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Dept. of Epidemiology and Pubic Health, Human and Animal Health Unit.  National manager for Guatemala “Research for Development Grant” for the project ‘Epidemiology of zoonotic diseases for the Petén region of Guatemala: a case for One Health’. Activities include direction of project with partner organizations in Guatemala (Del Valle University, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Council of Maya Elders, TIGO Company) and abroad (Basel University, Houston University Design Hub), fund leverage at national and international levels, team integration, execution of medical anthropology and environmental anthropology components in the field, monitoring and evaluation, writing of reports, scientific and lay publications, communication strategies for an ongoing Transdisciplinary process.

 

As a member of the Center for Health Research and Anthropological Reserch at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, I conducted research on access to healthcare of Trans and MSM populations in Guatemala and Escuintla (PASMO Funding, Nov 2016-Feb 2017); on “Food Security strategies for Adaptation to Climate Change in three communities of Guatemala” (Funding UVG 2016), and on “KAP for the National Malaria Strategy Evaluation”(Funding Hivos-CID Gallup 2017).

 

March 2015- February 2016

Post-Doctoral position at ETH Zurich, Department of Environmental Systems Science, Transdisciplinarity Lab. Tasks included preparation of scientific publications, coordination of Macocc research team, editor and main author of a large book on Maya Medicine written in Spanish and Maya languages, and completion of an ongoing transdisciplinary study comparing Maya and Oncological treatment on cancer patients in Guatemala. Parallel teaching position at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Faculty of Social Sciences. Thesis supervisor for two graduate students at Universidad Rafael Landivar (Health Sciences Master degree).

September 2010 to February 2015

PhD Researcher at ETH Zurich, Institute for Environmental Decisions, D-USYS, Natural and Social Science Interface Chair. Research in the fields of medical anthropology, ecohealth, and transdisciplinary studies. Acting as Project Manager for the MACOCC Project (Maya and Contemporary Conceptions of Cancer). In charge of fund leverage, network building among 12 international institutions in USA, EU and Central America, team coordination and supervision, writing of scientific and financial reports, scientific and lay publications (http://www.uns.ethz.ch/res/irl/cei/macocc). Parallel ad honorem teaching position at partner university in Guatemala City (Universidad del Valle de Guatemala).  Thesis supervisor for two undergraduate students at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (Anthropology degrees).
